[야구 용어] 워닝 트랙 (Warning Track)

야구 중계를 보다가 많이 듣게 되는 용어 중 하나가 "워닝트랙"이다.

홈런이 될지도 모를만한, 외야에 높이 뜬 타구... "워닝 트랙에서 잡혔네요"라는 중계를 많이 듣게 되는데, "워닝 트랙" ??? 무슨 말인지 생소하다.

"Warning" 의 뜻은 "경고". "Track"의 뜻은 "육상 경기장의 경주로"이다.

Wikipedia를 찾아보니, 설명이 잘 되어 있다.

외야수에게 외야 펜스 근처 지역임을 경고해 주기 위해서 만들어진 것이라고 합니다.

프로야구 경기장의 경우에는, 외야에는 대부분 잔디 또는 인공 잔디가 깔려 있는데, 펜스 근처 약 5m 영역은 일부러 잔디를 깔지 않고, 흙으로 한다는 것입니다. 

외야수가 외야에 뜬 공만 보면서 달리게 되면, 외야 펜스가 어디에 있는지 알기 어려운 상황이 될 수 있는데, 바닥이 잔디에서 흙으로 변화되는 것으로 펜스가 가까이 있음을 경고해 주는 역할을 하는 것입니다.

이것은 예전 양키스 경기장에서 유래되었다고 합니다. 육상 경기 이벤트를 위해서 실제로 running track을 만들었는데, 이것이 외야수에서 도움이 된다는 것을 알게 되었고, 다른 모든 경기장에서도 이를 도입하게 되었다고 합니다. 하지만, 여전히 워닝 트랙이 없는 경기장도 있다고 하네요. ^^

The warning track is the part of the baseball field that is closest to the wall or fence and is typically made of dirt, instead of grass or artificial turf like most of the field. It runs parallel to the ballpark's wall and looks like a running track. The change of terrain from grass to dirt serves as a "warning" for fielders trying to make a deep catch that they are running out of room, since it is often difficult for the fielder to keep his eye on a fly ball while keeping track of his position relative to the wall.

The "track" part of the term comes from Old Yankee Stadium, where an actual running track was built for the use of track and field events. It was soon realized that the track also helped outfielders know when they were approaching the wall, and soon every ballpark was using one. However, there still are professional fields without a proper warning track, such as Tropicana Field, which uses brown-colored turf.

The average length of the warning track (depending on the ballpark) is 690 ft while the width is 15 ft.
